    1. Perhaps the spark is weak? If so, you need to check:
    a) faulty HT lead
    b) I presume you've got a new plug, but if it's not, may be you should get a new plug, just to eliminate that possibility
    c) electrode gap
    d) loose spark plug cap
    e) moisture in the system causing shorting

    2. Perhaps also the ignition coil / electronic ignition unit is faulty and needs replacing

    3. Did you clean out the jets in the carb?

    4. Did you clean and blow out the air filter?

    5. Is the fuel line blocked or kinked?

    6. Perhaps the float chamber in the carb is not filling -- check needle for wear -- or may be the needle is stuck, preventing the chamber from filling and thus starving the carb of fuel

    7. May be the petrol tank is gummed up with dried oil? You'll have to flush the tank and clean out. If ever leaving a Vespa for a long time in storage, it always pays to drain the float bowl dry.

I hope these things aren't too obvious and you haven't done them already. If you haven't done them, you should check these things out first! Then once you've eliminated these things, you can start thinking of other possibilities. Good luck edited 19:18, 29 Aug 2010

    Is the compression OK?

Maybe check the oil - does it look OK? Maybe the seals are leaking - never had it myself so it is just a guess.

Is petrol coming out the exhaust? Maybe it is flooded - and spark plug subsequently fouled.

I'd try the brute force approach - put it in first, choke closed, throttle full open. Run along beside it in first (clutch in) and then jump on the seat to give the wheel grip and drop the clutch.

Hopefully the engine will turn over quickly and you can continue to run beside it with the throttle open for about 10 metres. If it doesn't go after about 5 attempts then give up that approach. Also be prepared to grab the scoot and clutch in if it does start!

I'm putting my money on one of the following:

    a) compression
    b) air leak somewhere (gasket?)
    c) faulty CDI unit, or faulty CDI connections. Borrow a CDI unit from a Vespa you know is working. You might even have new CDI unit which is faulty.

I once had a Vespa that wouldn't fire up and after doing all the usual checks, threw on a brand new CDI, and everything was fine. Electrics are so often the culprit, especially with older Vespas. edited 19:32, 30 Aug 2010
