    Quick notes on gear oil...

What I use is Castrol MTX SAE 75W/80.

The Haynes manual says to use SAE 30 motor oil.

Motor oil and gear box oil both have SAE numbers but the mean different things for oil types.

SAE 75W/80 gear oil is equivalent to SAE 10W/30 motor oil (as stated on the back of the Castrol MTX box). Also stated is suited to two-stroke, this and wet clutches are important for Vespas.

More info to come before going up on the main page.

I hope everyone agrees that the recommendation of the Haynes manual to change gearbox oil every 8000 kms is absurdly late. I think if you left it till then, you probably wouldn't be able operate the clutch and sludge in your box would probably be doing a good job of filing your gear teeth down! Even scooterhelp.com's recommendation of 5000 kms seems to be stretching things. I did that once, and the contents of the gearbox consisted of an dense, black sludge. I'm happier with 3000-4000 kms. Am I being too fussy? Any thoughts?

I am pretty lazy with gear oil changing. In the past I have run a gear box dry once (on a 900km trip). what happens is the clutch stops working :(

My rule of thumb now is to change the gear box oil before any big trip and not worry about it otherwise (generally you do it when you change the rear tyre, which is 5,000 km anyway)

I was riding approx. 250km a week to work and back and was changing mine every fortnight. Just stripped my engine, all the gears are in fantastic condition. Can't say the same for my clutch. The circlip popped out.
